That is not correct. ESTA gives you permission to get to the USA border, but customs officer will decide let you in or no,they will ask various questions. As soon as you granted permission to enter USA you can go anywhere you like to go, but in total your stay in USA has to be no longer than was permitted by USA Customs officer (usually it is 3 month).
