How do you make a cable box "Authorized" for use with existing cable?

I have an Explorer 830 HD Cable Box with DVR capability. I bought it at a garage sale. How do I get it to work with our current cable if the box is not authorized by the cable company? Is there something I can do internally to byp the authorization to use the DVR and tuner within?
